The amendments to Building Regulations Part L have been issued.

As from April 1st 2002, the installations of double glazed units manufactured with standard glass will no longer be acceptable in most situations.

All replacement windows will have to be double glazed with a Low E glass, and meet a certain standard of thermal performance or U-Value.  the new standard applies to all replacement windows as well, in the case of conservatories, if they are to be heated they have to comply, if not heated, standard glass can be used.
Why has the government made these changes?

As part of the Kyoto agreement, the UK Government has made commitments to reduce emissions of greenhouse gasses, such as carbon dioxide, which are harmful to the environment.
In the case of replacement UPVC Installations, approval must be authorised through one of two ways.

The first is through building control but this is likely to be costly and expensive, the second being the self-certification scheme called FENSA (Federation Self Assessment Scheme.) The scheme has been developed by  the DTLR to enable us to continue installing without having to have approval from Building Control for every installation.
